6 Practical Tips For Healthy Eating

If you are trying to eat healthier, you know just how difficult it can be to find a healthy meal on your lunch break, on the way home after work or anytime when you are hungry. It is often easier to grab something unhealthy because it is typically cheap and fast. Unfortunately, cheap and fast don’t always equal healthy and nutritious and that can mean excess fat, a feeling of sluggishness or moodiness and everything else that comes along with an unhealthy diet.

With that being said, we understand that eating a healthy, balanced diet can be hard, so we are going to share some of our favourite tips on how to eat healthier this spring and summer. Let’s take a look:

Tips For Healthy Eating

So, what is a healthy diet? It’s recommended that men have around 2,500 calories a day (10,500 kilojoules), and women should have around 2,000 calories a day (8,400 kilojoules). This includes a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. Most adults in the UK eat more calories than they should and here are some ways to eat fewer calories.

Eat Higher Fibre Starchy Carbohydrates- starchy carbohydrates including potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals should make up just over a third of the food you eat. These can help you feel full for longer.

Eat Lots Of Fruit And Veg- chances are, you are not eating enough salad. It is recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg every day. A typically chopped salad can count as up to three servings of vegetables, depending on what type of salad you choose.

Eat More Fish- fish, including oily fish like salmon and sardines, is good for you. It is an excellent source of omega-3 fats and protein, and fish contains a wide range of  vitamins and minerals. You should eat at least 2 portions of fish a week, including at least 1 portion of oily fish. You can add tuna to a chopped salad for a healthy, high protein meal.

Oily Fish Include:

  • Salmon
  • Trout
  • Herring
  • Sardines
  • Pilchards
  • Mackerel

Stay Hydrated- your body needs water to survive. It is recommended that you drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day and avoid sugary soft and fizzy drinks.

Cut Down On Saturated Fat And Sugar- this is the best tip if you are trying to lose weight and get in shape. Take a look at the foods in your pantry and fridge and get rid of anything that is high in sugar and saturated fats. Replace your high sugar/high fat snacks with a healthy chopped salad instead. Once you stop eating sugar and processed foods your taste buds will begin to taste foods differently and you will notice just how much better certain foods are.
