Causes and symptoms of Herniated disc conditions

What is herniated disc condition?

These days, due to our lifestyles we spend a lot of time sitting down especially in a bad posture. A surprising and alarming figure reveals 8 out of 10 people suffer some type of injury or back pain. Bad postures are one of the factors that accelerate the wear and tear and aging of the spine.

Herniated discs between the vertebrae is one of the major back diseases that the world population suffers, The  vertebrae that form the spine are cushioned by discs that are round in shape with a tough, outer layer  called annulus that surrounds the nucleus. Discs are located between each vertebra in the spinal column and work as shock absorbers for the vertebrae

A herniated disc also called slipped, bulged, or ruptured disc is a fragment of the vertebrae disc nucleus which is pushed out of the annulus in the spinal canal through rupture in the annulus. Discs that become herniated usually are in an early stage of degeneration. Herniated discs may occur in any part of the spine but is more common in the lower back (lumbar).

What are the symptoms of herniated disc?

Symptoms of herniated disc vary depending on the position and size of the herniation. If the herniated disc presses a nerve then the person may experience pain and numbness or weakness in that area of the body where  the nerve travel but the patient may experience mild low back pain or no pain if the herniated disc does not press on a nerve. Typically, a patient suffering with herniated disc may proceed with an episode of low back pain or a may have a history of intermittent episodes of low backache.

For many years, surgeries have been considered and promoted as the solution to herniated discs the fact being that one third of patients show no improvement in their condition after surgery.
